FAQ

Answer

Port 2 SIP is a simple service that allows you to transfer ("port") your UK mobile telephone number away from your current mobile operator to us, we'll then deliver all the calls and text messages to you via SIP (for voice calls) and HTTP (for SMS messages) for you to do whatever you like with them.

This service is intended for telecommunications experts and enthusiasts if you don't understand what SIP is but you want to port your mobile number to a VoIP service then have your VoIP provider contact us and we'll be happy to work with them to provide the service.

Answer

Your imagination is the limit, we've heard of customers using Port 2 SIP for:

  • Many people use us to get calls into a PBX for "converged" services so they can answer calls with either a desk phone or a mobile SIP client.
  • Others use us to provide secondary numbers on mobile devices using a mobile SIP client.
  • Someone moving overseas used us so they could still receive calls on their UK mobile number.
  • A wealthy middle-eastern customer who spends the summer in London purchased several expensive memorable numbers and ported them to us when he went back home so they didn't get "recycled" by the PAYG operator he was using. Next year when he arrives his staff will port the numbers back onto a SIM for him to use - he certainly knows how to live!
  • Got an interesting use-case? Tell us about it and we'll feature it here :)
Answer

Certainly, the steps are as follows:

  • 1. Obtain a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) from your current operator. This code allows us to take your mobile number from your current operator.
  • 2. Enter your details (including the PAC) in the form here.
  • 3. We automatically request your mobile number from your current operator. If you submit the PAC before 4pm the transfer will usually happen the next working day. Add an extra working day for orders submitted after 4pm
  • 4. As soon as your number port is accepted by your current operator you will be able to configure your SIP and SMS endpoints here in preperation for your port taking place.
  • 5. On the day of your port your current mobile service will cease and all calls and SMS messages will be routed to the endpoints you have configured
  • 6. You can change your endpoints here at any time.
Answer

Of course! Contact us and we'll issue you a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) to move your number to any other UK mobile network.

Answer

Behind the scenes we have partnered with one of the four major mobile operators but we aren't allowed to use their name in our marketing material. Your number will port into their network and be delivered to our equipment via our own interconnect and then passed to you via SIP.

Answer

Impossible Telecom provide strategic, technical and commercial consultancy to some of the world’s largest and most innovative telecoms companies as well as creating niche services such as Port 2 SIP.

We understand that your mobile number is every bit as important as your name and our policy is "no number left behind". Even if a customer stopped paying their bill we'd make every effort for them to keep their number rather than return it to the original operator where it will be recycled beyond hope of return.

In the unlikely event of us ever deciding to close this service we'll give you as much notice as possible and issue you with a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) so you can move your number to another UK mobile network.

Our "Company Will" triggers the automatic issuance of Porting Authorisation Codes (PAC) to each customer in the event of our entire executive team being wiped out in some kind of incredibly unlikely "King Ralph" scenario.

Answer

The SMS endpoint should be defined as an HTTP URL:

http(s)://your-application-url?from={{from}}&to={{to}}&charset={{charset}}&message={{message}}
